Hmm... how about, don't think of them as cards. Just as graphics with characters on them, since it doesn't make a difference.
With trading cards, you buy a packet (although these will be free upon request) and get a random, say, 5 cards with different characters on them. You can then trade them with other people until you get the ones you want. It'll be just like that, only with graphic-cards, and you can win as described above.
Ex: Say you want a Selphie card and you have a Balthier, you can trade that one with person that has Selphie in order to get closer to your predicted/desired deck?
I hope that helps a little? There really is not game involved in quite a lot of them, and that's as it is here... the only 'game' is trading with other people in an attempt to get the ones you want.
