I agree with Ari here. While it is difficult to put aside personal game bias, I usually try to, and I know I've voted for entries from games I don't know or even games I don't particularly like before just because they were well written/the graphics looked nice/etc. The only time this gets confusing is when there are terms that don't mean anything to me, like l'cie, in which case I try to figure out what I can from ff.wikia. (Though I use that as an example since I'm only more confused than ever the more I learn. Turning into crystals? What? I don't...)

If they were game specific, it would likely be for the more well known games, and then my old-school-FF heart would die a little. ;-;

I like the idea of a "mod's choice." I've seen it work on some graphic comms before, so I think it could work for any of the challenges here (and maybe be a confidence booster to someone who doesn't place regularly!). ♥

~Personally, I think the challenge scheduling is handled really well! They're not super hectic to me...the more time-consuming ones are the month-long ones, but since people get a whole month for them I think they have a good amount of time to work on both them and the half month challenges (which still get 15 days, so that's a pretty good amount of time as well!). I don't dislike the idea of the light-weight challenges though! I just wonder if that wouldn't be a lot of pressure for you and other UA mods though (to have to come up with so many challenges...they'd probably add up pretty quick). O_O;

~Oh, the rumble type of competition sounds neat! I'm not 100% sure how they work, but I think it would probably be pretty interesting from how you described it once I figure it out, lolz. XD

~I like the idea behind the "Mod's Choice"--that sounds rather neat in a way! :D

~And as everyone has said before me, I think the UA challenge schedule that has been going on right now is pretty fair and well-done. :D The light-weight challenges sounds like a neat concept, but as [livejournal.com profile] arivess said...perhaps they should be done sporadically? At least that way, it wouldn't be too hectic for the people coming up with them...and perhaps if they were announced ahead of time (such as mentioning a light-weight challenge coming up at a certain week awhile beforehand), maybe members could plan to set aside the time if they want to enter? *is unsure* As Breyzy said though, I hope it wouldn't put too much challenge on the UA mods to have to keep coming up with them while thinking of the other challenges too! ...It really just depends, I guess.

~The rumble idea sounds rather interesting too, I think! Granted...I don't make icons so maybe I shouldn't talk, lolz. XD

Yeah, I agree with your last point there Ari. I'm not hugely familiar with FFT, its characters or its story. Most of what I know has resulted from fandom osmosis on GFAQs, here, and from what I've learned from what Liv says. So I'm not on very sure ground with Tactics-related fics. Or IX, or VI, or XI.

Ari, you are like my polar opposite here

But hell, Yin's fight scene fic was a damn fine fic. Even without being hugely familiar with the canon, I could still appreciate the brilliance and intensity of that fight between Agrias and Delita.

The fact that pre-VII stuff is written about and appreciated is something that warms me immensely. Without that extra love for FFI-VI (or even to V) I think this landcom wouldn't be quite the same.

Just saying that I respect you for being so open and powerful with the love for those games, and I wish there was more.

[identity profile] zerrat.livejournal.com 2011-05-05 11:22 am (UTC)(link)
You know it to be true.

I don't actually look like Snow. GASP

[identity profile] zerrat.livejournal.com 2011-05-05 11:24 am (UTC)(link)
Hm, depends on the size and complexity as to how long it would take. Possibly around 30 hours, especially if I'm working with fur (that Sephiroth one oh my god) and how many accessories they have (Terra's beads, Lightning's... everything).

Those ones are usually around 25cm from base of foot to top of head (standing position).

If they were game specific, it would likely be for the more well known games, and then my old-school-FF heart would die a little. ;-;

Words right out of my mouth here - why do we keep stealing each other's answers, or is it just me?

But yeah I think certain games are definitely going to get more love than others, and I would be very sad if this ended up excluding the more obscure games.

[identity profile] the-404-error.livejournal.com 2011-05-05 04:49 pm (UTC)(link)
B'aw, I think this is true with the love all games get here. XD Just look at the wide variety on that letter contest-- V, VII, XI, XII: RW... I think it's great to see all aspects of the FF fandom coming together and appreciating each other, instead of constantly arguing like they do elsewhere.

[identity profile] the-404-error.livejournal.com 2011-05-05 04:55 pm (UTC)(link)
We've become thieves! DX Word_stealers? Brain_pilfers? Okay, that last one sounds more like we're harvesting brains... ignore me, I need sleep.

To be completely honest, if I joined and only saw competitions for VII - X, I would be far less enthusiastic about participating, and would end up being quite bored fairly quickly.

Word_stealers ... but but that's like the entire English language.

Rofl, true. Well, our mascot could be an English dictionary?

OED represent! :D

I guess it isn't a good idea to make it game-specific, but all the same, a lot of what makes a story so rich and stuff is context. It's not that I'm tempted to vote for things focusing on games that I know of only, it's that I don't trust myself to vote confidently...

I mean, it's not that only fics that I know of are well-written; I think Z's SWHN is really well written, but I can't keep reading it because I don't get it. I don't go in to the FF6 Fandom and try to read stuff even though it's really well written, because I won't get it. The same goes for challenges here; I read them because it's only fair that I should, but I don't get some of it either, and if I'm not going to understand the context in which "You spoony bard!" was made, or another scene similar to that where it really requires prior knowledge to understand, I'm most likely not going to vote for it.

Just imagine out of ten voters, eight of them have played FF10, whereas only three have played FF8, and some probably even dislike FF8. Never mind the well-written fic that is FF8, most likely people can't relate to the characters in FF8, whereas they can easily picture the characters in FF10, the setting, the dialogue, the interaction. Hence, the most "enjoyable" fic, would be FF10.

I haven't had trouble on voting for graphics, based on what looks pretty. It's just the fics that bug me, I guess.

Clearly I'm the only one who has this problem so that's fine, but those are my thoughts.

[identity profile] zerrat.livejournal.com 2011-05-06 01:57 am (UTC)(link)
SHOULD I START USING OTHER CHARACTER ICONS?!

[identity profile] zerrat.livejournal.com 2011-05-06 02:00 am (UTC)(link)
Don't feel bad about it, Eilia, because I do agree. Fics are damn hard to relate to, especially when you have no idea of the canon/fanon forces behind it.

Thanks for the support, but no-one's obligated to read the fic I spam the comms with. I'll do some VIII stuff soon, which will be fun! :3

[personal profile] glacialphoenix 2011-05-06 03:01 am (UTC)(link)
It's not so much that you're the only one who has this problem, I think? Because I totally get where you're coming from, and I think it's inevitable that you're going to gravitate towards the fandoms you're most familiar with. I think it's just because I'm more of a "Well, I don't know the context, but I thought this was well-written and I liked the style better, so hey why not vote it up?" kind of voter that I don't feel the same way about these things.

[identity profile] arivess.livejournal.com 2011-05-06 03:20 am (UTC)(link)
NO. BECAUSE THEN I'D BE LIKE WTF WHO ARE YOU YOU'RE NOT Z.

...Although I am curious how you look now.

[identity profile] arivess.livejournal.com 2011-05-06 03:26 am (UTC)(link)
But, like Mysti said, I don't go for context, I go for style. If something's written in a prettier style, I like it, and that's what "enjoyable" is to me.

What worries me more about limiting the games is basically, as I mentioned above, it'd cut participation even more, and we already don't have that much of it to begin with. If this were a bigger group, maybe, but with, what, only 5-10 people submitting each challenge, if you limit games, it's going to start to get closer to 4-5, even for the popular games, and then maybe just 2-3 for the less popular ones.

[identity profile] zerrat.livejournal.com 2011-05-06 04:50 am (UTC)(link)
Might be a post I can do in the [livejournal.com profile] airship_lounge after the current 30-Day Meme is over. People can post pics of themselves, but only if they choose to.

I myself might just post a pic of Snow, to troll you all. :3

[identity profile] arivess.livejournal.com 2011-05-06 04:52 am (UTC)(link)
XD That sounds like fun. MAKE IT COSPLAY PICS. *shot*

BAAAAAAAAAAW I KNEW YOU LOOKED LIKE SNOW. WITH BOOBS. PRESUMABLY.

[identity profile] zerrat.livejournal.com 2011-05-06 04:54 am (UTC)(link)
MY ONLY COSPLAY PICS INVOLVE ME IN A MASK, SO THAT'S NOT HELPFUL. I mean, there was Zero from Code Geass, and then there was Rorschach from Watchmen.

I'm short (*dies at admitting that*), female, and have brown hair. Not much like Snow, really

[identity profile] arivess.livejournal.com 2011-05-06 04:56 am (UTC)(link)
BAW. FINE. NORMAL PIC. XDDD

Short. HOW. NO. YOU MUST LOOK LIKE SNOW. *IN DENIAL*
